Tree pit covers-also known as tree guards or tree grates-are protective fixtures used in landscaping and municipal infrastructure; they are primarily installed over tree pits to prevent soil erosion and enhance aesthetic appeal. Typically assembled from symmetrical panels featuring a central opening for the tree and perforations for drainage, these covers are made from materials such as cast iron, resin composites, and fiberglass (FRP). They offer properties like corrosion resistance, a high strength-to-weight ratio, and flame retardancy, with some designs incorporating modular interlocking and locking mechanisms to deter theft.
Early tree pit covers were predominantly made of cast iron but suffered from issues such as susceptibility to theft and corrosion. After 2010, materials like fiberglass and resin composites gained popularity, becoming the mainstream choice due to their corrosion resistance, customizable colors, and ease of installation. In 2022, Nanjing's Gulou District pioneered the use of covers made from polymer composite materials; these offered significantly improved permeability and load-bearing capacity, featuring a "user-friendly" design that sits flush with the road surface. In recent years, manufacturing techniques have expanded to include diverse methods such as BMC and SMC molding, catering to the specific requirements of various applications.
